Grasshoppers

Grasshoppers are 1-to 2-inch long insects with powerful legs. They can be green, reddish-yellow or brown. In addition to their large hind legs, they have prominent jaws and fully developed wings. Grasshoppers are voracious feeders, consuming approximately one-half of their body weight per day.

Damage

Grasshoppers feed on plant stems, leaves and crops. Populations vary from year to year. A large infestation can defoliate an entire crop field and defoliate large portions of a garden. Due to their mobility and shear numbers, grasshoppers can be very difficult to control.

Location

Grasshoppers are found throughout the United States.
